The Food Standards Agency (The FSA), today released guidance in a step towards the regulation of CBD products in the UK. Guidance has been long awaited by those of us keen to see the sector mature and now provides some useful clarity on the FSA’s stance toward CBD products.

The article (linked below) offers consumer advice which is largely in-line with the advice any knowledgeable CBD business should already provide;

• CBD products should be provided with clear labelling, to show these are safe for consumption. (We would also always recommend that 3^rd Party lab test results are available). Read our guide to buying CBD products
• Consult your Doctor before taking CBD if already on medication. This is especially true if ingesting CBD (oral drops and capsules). Consider that our liver requires enough time to process both CBD and certain medicines.
• In the absence of sufficient data, the FSA advise women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid consumption of CBD, (less helpfully perhaps, the FSA state no position on topical CBD products).
• Do not exceed 70mg of CBD per day, equivalent to 28 drops from a 5% formulation. (We recommend 30mg per day in most instances).

In a welcome step towards regulations, the FSA has given the industry until 31 March 2021 to submit applications for Novel Food authorisation, (this again omits mention of topical CBD products), we will seek clarity from the FSA on topical CBD products.
